“Courage is like—it’s a habitus, a habit, a virtue: You get it by courageous acts. It’s like you learn to swim by swimming. You learn courage by couraging.”

– Brene Brown

What’s Good:

Congratulations to Brielle & David Jacobs for the birth of their beautiful baby boy, Graham!

Graham was born on February 5th at 27 weeks old and is now in the NICU. He is currently doing well and we ask for your prayers that this continues and he’s able to be home with his family soon! The hospital is not allowing visitors at this time, but if you’d like to send a message please reach out to us and we will connect you. ❤️

Last week the cohort who visited from Duke’s Foundations of Christian Leadership came back to visit Rose Hip Market to talk with Jess and Katie Best-Richmond about the journey of Rose Hip coffee trailer, what it looks like to build strong and meaningful partnerships, and how community has been cultivated in the neighborhood through the partnership of Rose Hip and Charis Collective. It was a joy to be with this group of leaders, share stories, and hear about the work that they are leading in their own communities.

Message from Jess:

Have you ever wondered how much of what you say is influenced by movies or television shows that you’ve watched? Maybe it’s simply because I’m part of that “elder millennial,” young gen-x demographic, but I am regularly surprised when I revisit an old show or movie and see how I was shaped by its culture.

When we decided to purchase the coffee trailer, my brain imagined us going around exclaiming, “We bought a zoo!” like the beautiful Cameron Crowe movie from about a decade ago. Naturally, this led to a family movie night and we rewatched the moment when Matt Damon’s character says to his son:

You know, sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage, just literally 20 seconds of embarrassing bravery, and I promise you, something great will come of it.”

I had forgotten that this idea came from a movie, but it is one that I have shared and one that I have lived, and to me, right now, I feel our community brimming with possibility and hope so strongly. I think if we all just tried for 20 seconds of insane courage—something really great could happen.

20 seconds is all it takes to send a message asking to meet to mend a broken relationship.

20 seconds is all it takes to look up from your busy life and ask another person how their day is going.

20 seconds is all it takes to decide to get out of your sweatpants and go gather around the table with your community instead of staying home.

The list goes on and on and on.

In this community, I pray 2023 will be marked by courage. As I shared a couple of weeks ago we are starting to be people who recognize our blessedness, and out of the blessedness we are called to respond.

Blessed are you having the courage to love

Blessed are you having the courage to give away your power

Blessed are you having the courage to fight injustice and make peace

Blessed are you having the courage to get out of bed today

Blessed are you having the courage to ask for forgiveness

Blessed are you having the courage to reenter community even when you’ve been hurt before

How will you practice 20 seconds of courage this week? I can’t wait to see what happens.

Love, Jess
