“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Community Sustains Us
Sarah Clavieres, Manager, Sunset Ridge Farmers Market
Does hope for the future start with people and community, or with nature?
A very interesting conversation that happened at the One Another coffee truck this week brought my thoughts to where does all this change that needs to happen start? For me, over the last decade, I have been so hyper-focused on sustainability, nature, and our food systems. I’ve always understood that community is necessary for sustainability and a catalyst for change and impact. Only recently though, have I started to wonder if my priorities were out of order. If I put people first, does the connection with nature that I long for society follow?
People can grow gardens, implement circular sustainable systems, and create initiatives that offer a different perspective. All of these have the potential to inspire and contribute to a more ecologically-driven and soil-conscious society. But without a thriving community for people to openly share their talents, skills, or ideas in a meaningful, connected, and impactful way, there won’t be any momentum behind them and our lifestyles—no matter if they lack sustainability or fulfillment. Without this, a community will most likely remain stagnant or controlled. So does community need to be prioritized before nature? Maybe.
I feel so lucky to be a part of the community that has sprouted at Charis Park in the last year since the land was transformed from a parking lot into a park by Sunset Ridge Church. It has made a very hard adjustment year into a transformative one. It has been a space offering rest, friendship, inspiration, a way to directly participate in our local economy, and so much more.
The Collective received a beautiful note this week from a neighbor that speaks to how a lot of us who live near the park feel. The note reads, “Living next door, Charis Park has become a cornerstone of our daily experience, a gathering spot for play dates, a place for learning opportunities about the changing seasons, and a network for meeting active community members at the Saturday Sunset Ridge Farmers Market. Being able to enjoy Charis Park has literally changed lives - thank you Sunset Ridge Collective.”
What a gift for the community to be able to come together so often. I encourage you to come visit the park and the farmers market on Saturdays to see what all the buzz is about. I know it fills me with hope and gratitude when I get to spend time outside and speak to my neighbors and the farmers who grow my food. See you there!
