My Outdoor Office
Che Ortiz, Program Manager, One Another Coffee
Often when I get asked where I work on campus I smile because sometimes it's a hard answer.
Some days it’s in the downstairs office next to my dear friends Sean, Jan, and Julie. Other days it's in our tiny green trailer. And sometimes you can find me in the commercial kitchen with fresh scents of our new syrups lingering or in our packed storage room with boxes all around. On the best days it’s outdoors getting my vitamin D watching neighbors in our community sitting at our picnic tables enjoying their coffee.
Over the course of my time working for One Another Coffee I’ve worn practically every hat. I’ve worked bar shifts in the coffee trailer making drinks. I’ve made every batch of syrup in our commercial kitchen, and counted, sorted and stocked shelves in our shared storage room. I’ve somehow squeezed in management and emails until it was too much to carry.
Over the past year One Another has grown tremendously. So has our team.
This past week was one of those weeks where I was able to step back and appreciate what an amazing team of baristas we have. Usually we have just one barista scheduled per shift, occasionally two on the weekends. But on very rare occasions all baristas get scheduled on the same day to get their duties done before a holiday. This past weekend, we had Abbie, Sabryna, and Jeb all on campus.
Sabryna was in the kitchen making our first batch of seasonal strawberry syrup. Jeb was packing and unpacking items for the week in the storage room next to us, popping in and out with his silly jokes. Abbie was down in the trailer serving drinks with a kind smile making every customer feel welcomed. Together Abbie and Sabryna drew our seasonal sign, and Jeb took photos of our new seasonal drink by the flowers.
Meanwhile I was able to work on schedules and behind-the-scenes work for the trailer and other projects with Sunset Ridge. And I got to enjoy my favorite part of the job: sipping my coffee and being present.
I chatted with regulars who are now friends. Laughter echoed from the park. I watched first-time customers discover their new favorite drink. I noticed baristas remembering someone's usual order before they even reached the window. I overheard friends chatting about the farmers market. I asked a customer about her specialized drink that I’m curious to try. I snuck into the trailer to hand off an OAC sticker to a toddler who wasn't having the best day. All interactions often ended with smiles and waves of thank you and goodbye.
Most of these little moments happen as I'm facing my laptop with a smile on my face. They're the kind of moments that make me love my job.
Over time I’ve learned leadership isn't about wearing all the hats and taking on all the work alone. It's about allowing space for your team to use their gifts. And it’s truly an honor to witness the talent spread among this team. Everyone here brings their own strengths, and together it blossoms into something great that benefits our small team, our customers, and our community.
That's what my outdoor office has taught me this past week.
One Another Coffee is about more than just serving drinks.
It's a place where hospitality is practiced, gifts are shared, friendships are formed, and ordinary work becomes something much bigger than any one person could accomplish alone.
I can't imagine a better office.
