WHAT’S GOOD
This Saturday will be our last Second Saturday before we begin the start of the new school year. We will be continuing the Kids’ Market with young Entrepreneurs showcasing their creations. Let’s celebrate the start of this new season and enjoy the abundance of offerings from our children and vendors, as well as coffee from One Another Coffee, yoga with NYX Wellness, and Storytime with Miss Anastasia.
Rainbow Hunting
Taylor Bates, Deputy Director, Sunset Ridge Collective
You’ve probably heard the phrase, “What you focus on will grow.” For years after losing my firstborn son, who was stillborn, I focused on rainbows. It started with the tiniest glimmer of hope—a small rainbow seen in the sky the evening he was born—and became a symbol that framed my focus for years. I noticed more rainbows and shared them along with my story, and others began to see and share rainbows with me, too. It was a mystical, paradoxical time: somehow, in my deepest grief, I had the capacity to keep looking for rainbows, for beauty, for hope.
Recently, I went with two of my dearest friends—who walked with me through that season—on a two-night girls’ trip to celebrate a 40th birthday. When we arrived at our cabin in the woods, Jess spotted what looked like a rainbow through the tree canopy. We all turned to squint upward and caught a glimpse. Then she said, “Want to go rainbow hunting?!”
We hopped in the car and drove down the winding, rocky road, searching for a clearing in the sky. Sure enough, a full rainbow unfolded above us. We got out and climbed to the highest spot we could find, gazing up at the pink-hued clouds and the misty arc stretching overhead.
That moment ended up being one of my favorite parts of the trip. We could’ve stopped at that first glimpse through the trees—but taking the time to widen our view created an experience full of wonder.
I don’t see rainbows as often these days—not like I did during that tender season of grief. Now, I have to seek them out.
So I’ll leave you with a gentle challenge: What are you focusing on right now? Maybe, just maybe, there’s something worth “rainbow hunting” for—something that might spark a little wonder in you this week.
