“Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.”
— John Lennon
One Another Coffee is hosting its first thrift pop-up of the year on Saturday, January 31, from 9 AM–1 PM, during the farmers market’s Secondhand Saturday–themed market at Charis Park. Stop by the One Another Coffee truck to thrift curated secondhand finds, enjoy great coffee, and support a good cause — all proceeds from the coffee truck’s thrift pop-up will benefit Nuevos Vecinos.
What Really Matters When Plans Change
Jess Lowry, Executive Director, Sunset Ridge Collective
I didn’t ever see it coming.
When I watch the video back, I can see it in slow motion—the chunk of ice that clocked me square in the nose. It was Christmas break. We were visiting my parents up north and took the kids out to find snow and do a little tubing. There were eight of us, each on our own tube—my husband, my brother, and the five kids between our two families, linked together in one long chain, flying down a hill of snow and ice. We were laughing as we went, until a chunk of ice kicked up from one of the banks and turned my snow fun into a bloody nose.
It reminded me of a famous Mike Tyson quote: Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. (Or, in my case, until you take an ice chunk to the nose.)
I love to make plans. I like when things go the way I expect (who doesn’t?). I’ve spent a great deal of energy trying to anticipate what might go wrong so I can create a backup plan just in case. Sometimes that works. Most often, though, what doesn’t go according to plan is more like an ice chunk—something I couldn’t have seen coming.
We are in the planning stage of the year. Big goals. Resolutions. New habits. The whole new year, new you era. I’m not here to criticize any of that—only to ask the question I’ve been asking myself: Is all of this forming me into who I want to become?
As I reflected on my year, listened to my husband Nathan’s reflections, and asked our kids some questions about 2025, the points of light were remarkably consistent. They were the moments of connection. The meals around a table. The times we were doing what we love with the people we love.
So as you begin this year, I want to extend an invitation. Before jumping headlong into a new plan, take time to notice what was life-giving for you and for those you love in 2025, and also what drained you. Where did you become more of who you want to become? What made you less? Use that wisdom to guide what you will do more of in 2026—and what you won’t.
A plan will change. A resolution will get off track (statistically, by the second Friday in January, known as Quitters Friday). But becoming more whole, more kind, more generous…that goodness holds fast, even when the ice chunks come.
May this year greet you with kindness.
May you find a little good—and make more.
May you ease the suffering of another, even just for a moment.
May you know peace in your heart.
May a gentle light guide your days.
Love,
Jess
