“Since you cannot do good to all, you are to pay special attention to those who, by the accidents of time, or place, or circumstances, are brought into closer connection with you.”
–Saint Augustine
What’s Good
As we were visited by the summer solstice last week, we were also visited by lots of rain. Not only were we able to see Charis Park’s rain garden feature at work, the freshly laid bermuda grass received the perfect amount of watering to help the sod begin to settle. We are waiting for a few key elements to be delivered and installed, but daily are grateful for the progress we get to witness.

This neighborhood, Sunset Ridge/Terrell Heights sits on a hill–convenient in times of heavy rain as it just rolls off and down the street. In times past it was a tuberculosis hospital and before that–who knows? Maybe a Native American campsite where they watched the sunset and kept a lookout for animals down in the valley below. This hill has been here for a long time.
Now the Sunset Ridge Collective is transforming it once again by activating their campus for the neighborhood: the Sunset Ridge Church of Christ, One Another Coffee trailer and Scott’s Pizza, and the brilliant new park that is coming alive across the street. Inside the main building we see new life with the addition of a neighborhood nature-based preschool and the once stagnant rooms that are now coworking and creative office spaces. Everything going on at the campus is far from anything it's ever been.
When I stopped by the coffee trailer this morning there were three kids on bikes, well two bikes and one on a scooter, scooting around, having fun with mom standing nearby. There was another baby in a stroller at the barista station with her mom, three adults under the umbrellas having conversation, and Che, the barista, working hard with their beautiful patient smile.
This is the neighborhood mission of the Sunset Ridge Collective and the church I gladly partake in up on this hill. Perfect for me, I’m not a religious person at all but they have invited me to their community and included me in their celebration. They have shared their blessings generously and I so much respect that.
Creating a neighborhood energy center where people can meet, enjoy, contemplate, and recreate is, in my view anyways, essential for a healthy community and an important part of being human. We need to talk and be listened to. We need to share the love. We need to believe in those little kids running around with the endless lithesome energy. We need to believe in ourselves too and in the power of community that we can create.

May I find ease
Exhale:
in connection to my community.
