“Mere color, unspoiled by meaning, and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways.”
- Oscar Wilde
What’s Good
This weekend we had a long overdue birthday celebration of a dear community member, leader, and friend, Melanie Fry. Celebrating in the park with close friends, and witnessing the neighborhood enjoying the beautiful weather in the evening as the sun set filled us all with such joy and excitement.
De Colores
Mae Czarnecki, Communications Coordinator, Sunset Ridge Collective
As an overly ambitious, completely non-bilingual, homeschooling mom of three toddlers, every six weeks of our school year, I taught my girls a new folk song in Spanish. One of their favorites was “De Colores.” Their tiny voices are still so very clear in my head over my iPhone SE playing the YouTube video as loud as it could manage.
They now split residency between their father’s home in Rockport, and here in San Antonio. I moved here with them in January of 2022 and in the time that’s passed, have fallen in love with the city. Seasons have come and gone as we’ve adjusted to a new home, and life as a divorced family. We made new friends, started new schools and jobs. I have coped with change, for the better part of my life, through photography and writing. While they were away at their dad’s, I leaned heavily into this part of my identity.
My phone, my DSLR, and my ever-growing collection of Facebook Marketplace and estate sale film cameras have been my companions in times of loneliness. From the freeze of that first winter, to the fresh crop of flowers each spring, to the fading of their blooms in the fall, I have documented the changes. The rainbows of the papel picado that shimmy like never-falling-confetti overhead, and the bold exclamation of murals against the pink and beige bricks of historic buildings, gave me a reason to pause and pick up my camera.
The more photos I took, the more I ran into other artists inspired by the city. I started going to events hosted by photo walk groups, and stumbled my way through my first FotoSeptiembre last year. It’s San Antonio’s citywide event celebrating photography with collections and events throughout the entire month of September. Through the many gallery openings and events last year, I started to make friends with the most creative and talented photographers that I am lucky enough to now call friends.
Part of my job here at Sunset Ridge Collective has been curating quarterly galleries that are on display in our Coworking space upstairs in our office building. A goal I set for myself last year as I hopped from reception to reception was to create an exhibit for this year’s FotoSeptiembre. With the help of an extremely talented community, I am happy to present “De Colores; The colors of San Antonio.”
The works selected for this collection are not only beautiful, but signify friendship, intentional mindfulness, and the unexpected vibrancy that surrounds us all in San Antonio. We would love for you all to meet the photographers and see their works at our opening reception, Thursday, September 26th, at 6pm.
