Holding It All

Mae Czarnecki, Communications Coordinator, Sunset Ridge Collective

We have a new coworker at Sunset Ridge Collective.

He doesn’t pay for a membership. He doesn’t leave the room when he toots. And he gets unlimited snack breaks.

His name is Bass and he’s our Collective Coordinator’s newborn baby boy.

The joy that fills an office full of mostly women with a new baby in our midst is immeasurable. It is proof of the multifaceted nature of being human, and being part of our community here. Shortly after cooing over Bass’s sweet wiggles, we step into the next room to hold space for a family who experienced the death of a spouse in our church. We are holding hands with women who are remembering their children during Infant Loss Awareness month. We are buying congratulatory coffees in celebration of new babies, businesses, and blessings. We are practicing “both, and” from moment to moment, together.

The ability to hold all of these things, whether it be together all at once, or in a well choreographed juggle, takes both skill and strength, neither of which can be cultivated by an individual without community.

This Saturday we have the opportunity to host a highly anticipated event, the Grand Opening of Charis Park, as evidence of our flourishing experiment. Many new families (and their babies) from the neighborhood; our coworkers that we pass in the halls each day; our congregation members who have watched the evolution of Red Cross Building, to parking lot, to park; all will be in attendance to celebrate shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand, the growth of our community.

If you see a lady at the park on Saturday, with furrowed eyebrows, sweating, please do wave hello. Just remember that I’m also holding a camera and tripod, wondering where my kids are, and making sure I’m checking off my shot list frame by frame.
