What’s Good
Not only is Second Saturday this week, it is the first weekend of Sunset Ridge Farmers Market! Through local, seasonal producers, we aim to continue to grow our community by connecting farmers to San Antonio residents, starting here in Terrell Heights. It is the hope of these local businesses that we make the Sunset Ridge Market part of your weekly rhythm, by investing in our land, our people, and a healthier future for all.
The Market and donation based yoga start at 9. Storytime with Miss Anastasia starts at 10:15. Customers can expect a craft activity at Talking Tree Farms information table. They can meet ranchers and farmers selling fresh produce, mushrooms, meat, and eggs. We hope to see you there.
A Dose of Perspective
Jess Lowry, Executive Director, Sunset Ridge Collective
Late Wednesday night we had a knock on our door. So late that I grabbed my phone and typed 911 just in case. My husband Nathan answered the door to find a tall young man whose car broke down in front of our house—he needed help pushing the car off the road. Nathan and our son Luca went out to help him and saw his little girl sitting on the curb.
He was a delivery driver who had one last package to drop and then had to figure out a way to get himself and his daughter to the south side of town where they lived.
Nathan decided he would drive them to deliver the package and then drive them home.
When he got back to our house, my husband was markedly different. You see, our house lately has felt a bit like a series of unfortunate events. We have listed it to sell so that we can move into Terrell Heights to be closer to our community. Then the garage door broke, Nathan blew out his knee, our patio needed to be repaired, etc…and we were both swept up in the frustration of all of it.
As Nathan drove the man and his young daughter he heard a bit of their story, what they had been through, the cars that had been stolen, the ways that he has to work but things like a car breaking down can throw his whole world off its axis.
My husband & I got a dose of perspective.
I tell you this story today because I don’t have some profound wisdom to share about this week’s election. Instead, I have here this little moment in time that both shows the kindness that I believe we are called to be in the world and the reality that exists when we open our eyes and look around at the experience of another human being.
This week people are scared, or angry, or excited—or so many complex feelings depending on their unique human circumstances. So instead of spending all of our time reading and watching and being consumed by this election—we vote and we put our effort and attention into the people around us. We get some perspective and do what we can to spread as much goodness as we can to every person we meet.
May we have the courage to walk into this week spreading more love and light than anything else that comes through us…may we have the courage to create the world that we want to live in.
Love-Jess
