“One life on this earth is all that we get, whether it is enough or not enough, and the obvious conclusion would seem to be that at the very least we are fools if we do not live it as fully and bravely and beautifully as we can.”

– Frederick Buechner

Message from Jess:

I wonder what it would take for us to feel like we have everything we need?

Whether it’s for back to school, packing for vacation, or getting ready for the work week ahead I feel like I’m constantly asking, “Okay, what else do we need?”

When the phone charger is forgotten, or the tennis shoes are left behind, or the favorite water bottle is lost, I am reminded that we regularly confuse our wants for our needs.

In her book Grow Wild, author Katy Bowman shares that we, as human beings, have nine categories of need: rest, family, play, nature, food, work, community, movement, and learning. When I practice my daily Examen or respond to my morning journal prompt, What would make today great?, I know that my soul is yearning for these needs to be met.

When Jesus taught his disciples to pray he focused on his relationship with God and asked for daily bread, for forgiveness and to forgive, to be kept safe, and for the coming Kingdom. We believe that this coming Kingdom means goodness and flourishing for all people and that we have work to do every day in partnership with God. We long for a world where all people are safe, fed, held in community, and free.

With the mission of working for the flourishing of one another and our neighborhood we are so excited to reveal the work that we have been doing as a team with Coral Studio landscape architects for Charis Park at Sunset Ridge. We dream of a place where neighbors can rest, play, connect, and grow—where the markers of goodness and wellness abound and people begin to feel a little less lonely and a little more whole.

Join us this Friday night at our Sunset Worship service to see the park plans revealed—we can’t wait to spend time with you there!

This week we invite you to consider: How will you contribute to the flourishing of another person?

Good Work:

and you are here too

In this new season help me to rely on you for daily bread

Keep me, Lord, forgiven & forgiving

May your kingdom come & may I participate in its arrival

through kindness, through action, through presence

Your will be done in me & through me this day

Amen.

Evening:

God, you are the giver of good gifts & today I saw them around me

Every person a unique face of you, God, an opportunity to know you & see you more fully

Help me rest tonight confident of your presence in my life and renew me for the work again tomorrow—

of goodness & flourishing for all people

Amen.
