“Faith does not need to push the river because faith is able to trust that there is a river. The river is flowing. We are in it.”

— Richard Rohr

Message from Jess:

At the beginning of 2020, a group of congregation members, leadership, and ministers gathered in the Sunset Ridge Fellowship Hall as the team who would work together to discern God’s path forward for the Sunset Ridge Church of Christ.

During the meeting everyone was sent out for a period of prayer and invited to walk the grounds, the building, and the neighborhood with an openness to where God was already at work.

When the group convened in the Fellowship Hall there was an overwhelming response to the empty parking lot across the street from the church, which sparked a dream of creating a neighborhood park.

That work would continue over a year later through a partnership with Good Acres who help churches use their properties for community building, hiring Coral Studio landscape architects after a months-long Request for Proposals process, and gathering input from neighbors and the Sunset Ridge congregation–all solidifying the vision for what we call Charis Park at Sunset Ridge.

We envision Charis Park at Sunset Ridge as a gathering place for community connection. It will be a peaceful, natural oasis that invites neighbors to connect with one another and nature. Each visit, neighbors of all ages experience wonder as they discover new ways to gather, to learn, to eat, to play and to rest.

We imagine that each visit to the park will be regenerative—nurturing the flourishing of each person and as a result, the whole community.

What you’ll see here is a result of months of work by a team of stakeholders including neighbors and congregation members, guided by our consultants from Good Acres. The final elements of the park were chosen through the selection process arranged by Coral Studio that the community and congregation were involved in during the weekend of the Yard Sale.

We are so excited to show you the results of this work.

Morning:

This morning I seek your goodness

I take your hand

I walk with you and work with you today

Help me to learn your unforced rhythms of grace

To not fight against where you’ll lead me

But enter into the flow of love—

Lead me in love today

Love for you, love for myself, and love for my neighbor

Amen.

Evening:

Tonight I accept your invitation to rest

To come away with you, to find peace in you

I lay down what is heavy and burdensome

to keep company with you

and accept what is free and light

Help me to breathe in your presence and exhale

all of the things that worry my heart and mind

Tonight, I rest in your grace

Amen.
