Goodness Weekly 2.7.22
"If spirituality is not a very real growth in inner and outer freedom it is not authentic spirituality."
— Richard Rohr, Just This
Message from Jess:
Today we delivered baskets from our Sunset Ridge Life Groups to three Afghani families. The baskets contained food, household goods, etc. as a way of extending our welcome and as an act of peace.
The response from each family was the Pashto word “Manana,” which means “acceptance”—I accept what you have done. This is their way of saying “thank you.” In addition to acceptance, we were treated to a beautiful tea and treats of nuts and candies in their homes.
As we embark on a journey to simplify areas of our lives to make room to love God, ourselves, and our neighbors better, we start with food. One question we are holding is: “How can we love our neighbors better through our food practices?”
And the answer to the question is simple: we share and we accept.
Generosity and hospitality are two of Charis’s core values and it was a privilege today to be shown how to do both well.
This week we invite you to consider how you might break bread, pour a cup of tea, and build a new friendship. How can you love your neighbor better through food?

What’s Good
Supper church is a new practice for our community and is so special to us—it happens the first Sunday of every month.
Last night we witnessed multiple generations chopping, sautéing, and scooping—all the excitement and energy to make a lovely soup meal and warm bread to be broken with neighbors. So very good.
Our first of seven workshops to help simplify our lives was focused on food. Download a copy of the workshop materials here. Let us know what challenge you will take on to simplify your food practices this month!
Partner Updates
One way to help curb your food waste is by composting! It is a practice that not only diverts organic waste from landfills where it cannot biodegrade, but also directly shows us how much food we waste in our own homes.
Our newest community partner, Compost Queens, makes urban composting super easy and mess-free! We are now a drop-off site where subscribers can drop their buckets of food scraps to be converted into nutrient-rich soil. Learn more and sign up here: compostqueenstx.com
