The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.”

The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. Then he turned, smiled and said, “It made a difference to that one!”

What’s Good?

This past Saturday, our community of friends and neighbors came out to work together to assemble care packages and write cards for 30 Uvalde families affected by the recent school shooting. We also collectively wrote 17 letters to our state senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz urging them to support gun legislation to help prevent these senseless tragedies.

Message from Jess:

Here we are, grieving yet another tragedy of precious lives of our neighbors lost last week. And we cry out that we want the world to change, that something has to be different, and at the same time we feel so overwhelmed and are paralyzed by the magnitude of it all.

When we began our adoption journey, someone close to us said, “There are millions of children who need help, what difference will it make to help just one of them?”

The person who offered us that perspective believed that children in need are not individual, beloved, human beings, but a whole, unsavable group. And when we refuse to get up close and personal with people, we do this too—it’s a problem with “them” “out there”, which makes us overlook the reality that the problems that pervade our culture are absolutely an “us” problem.

What if that child in need is your child?

That is God’s view of each and every single one of us. And precisely what Jesus modeled for us all—a radical sight that allowed us to see each person as worthy of love and belonging. Each act of love, kindness, goodness, and beauty are revolutionary steps to changing the world.

This week, we ask that you join us in naming each bit of goodness you see. It can be an act of love from you, something you witness, or something that is done to you in kindness.

Send them to us, no matter how big or small, on our Instagram, via text message, or to hello@chariscollective.org,

Look out for those bits of goodness, and be the one that lives love out. It makes a difference even if it’s just with one person. The world so desperately needs it right now.

Morning:

God, I know that you are good

and I look around and struggle

to see the goodness

Give me radical sight to find that which is

good, beautiful and kind

Help me to be that in the world

Help me to take responsibility for

my actions, thoughts, and words

May they reflect your image

May I be kindness, goodness and love

In a world that so desperately needs it

Amen.

Evening:

I found some goodness today God

and so much heartache too

The world is hurting and my heart along with it

Give me the peace to rest tonight

Ready tomorrow to begin again

Working for good in the lives

of the people you created

In my unique place in the world

In the small ways I can

For your glory

In Jesus name,

Amen.
